Castello di Varese Ligure

The castle is located in the upper Vara valley, in Varese Ligure, in the province of La Spezia; it was a military structure with defensive purposes, built in the fifteenth century by the Fieschi - one of the most important Genoese families, descendants of the counts of Lavagna - on an existing fortification, a focal point for controlling the passage between the Ligurian sea and the Po valley ; the castle was used as a prison and also as the seat of the podestà appointed by the Genoese Doges; it was restored in the sixties of the twentieth century and today it is owned by the municipality and hosts exhibitions, conferences and events.

I only saw it externally. But the structure is very interesting. The country, which did not know, is pretty cute and quaint.

The castle of Varese Ligure was built by the Fieschi counts in the Middle Ages. The castle and the adjoining fortified village experienced many vicissitudes and destruction over time. Today only a few parts of the castle remain as the main tower and an adjoining central body of a round shape. After the renovation, which gave it new life, it becomes the property of the municipality and hosts exhibitions and / or events

Can be visited during city festivals. Well preserved manor both inside and out. Easy parking not far away and very close to Borgo Rotondo.
