The excavations are of the ancient Kaulon or Kaulonìa. Almost two hundred years ago the inhabitants of the village of Castelvetere convinced that the ancient city was in their territory thought to change their name, in Caulonia. Then in the last century, the city was found in the territory of Monasterace. Excavations are more and more careful, each season gives us finds of immense value. It should be better protected and cared for.

It could manage much better than how it is managed. The exhibits, especially the dragon mosaic, are exceptional and elsewhere, they would have been properly valued. The walk in the archaeological park is depressing, among brushwood, rusty and crumbling signs and generalized neglect. More should be done.
